# Recycling and Trash Collection

# What goes Where

# Recycling

The UK does not use single stream recycling (like the US and other jurisdictions do) so it's important that the policies which are expressed by Brent Council are followed for what constitutes "recycling".

In Brent this means:

Allowed Not Allowed
  • plastics (but not plastic bags)
  • glass
  • tins
  • cardboard
  • styrofoam or cellophane
  • bio-degradable bags
  • bubble wrap
  • tupperware containers
  • foil-lined packets
  • plastics bags or storage boxes

Note that, annoyingly, this includes no bin liner bags so you're bringing recycling out to the outdoor bin you'll need to empty it into the bin without the bin liner.

# Garden Waste

Allowed Not Allowed
  • grass clippings
  • leaves
  • plants and prunings
  • garden weeds
  • small tree branches
  • hedge trimmings
  • fallen fruit (in small amounts)
  • soil
  • food waste
  • bricks or rubble
  • plastic plant pots or bags
  • large tree branches
  • Japanese knotweed

# Bins

# Outside

When you enter the house you'll see three bins out front (and possibly a blue sack and small green container). These are for:

  • The Blue Bin is for recycling (reminder: no bin liners)
  • The Grey Bin is for general waste
  • The large Green Bin is for garden waste

The following are left outside for pickup by Brent council periodically:

  • The small Green Container is for garden waste
    • Note: resides in Kitchen except for pickup
  • The Blue Sack is for paper and cardboard

You're not required to put trash from the inside bins to the outside bins but where you can it's appreciated.

# Inside

Most of the bins in the house will be moved into general waste at the completion of your stay but when in the Kitchen there are more options:

# Kitchen Bin

In the kitchen we have an upright bin for trash and recycling. See pictures below.

If you find that the bin liners are full you should be able to find more liners in the drawer below the microwave. The bin liner for the recycling bin is important too but any bag can be used.

# Compost

To the left of the kitchen sink there's a small green box where you can put compost. If it starts to overflow then you can move that compost to the bigger bin outside.

# Nespresso Pods

In the middle of the kitchen counter, right next to the Nespresso machine, there is a container for all used pods (shown in picture to left as container in the middle).

Rachael goes to extra effort to ensure that these get recycled so please do take advantage of this.

# Pickup Schedules

  • General Waste bins are picked up every Thursday (time of day can vary)
  • Recycling bins are typically picked up every other week but follow a posted schedule:
