# Rebooting the NUC Server

NUC Server

# What is the NUC Server

The NUC server is small (in stature) server that powers many of the automations in the house as well as monitors the house for issues.

# Where is the NUC Server

The NUC server lives on the 2nd floor in what we used to call the Den (it is now used as a hybrid bedroom/office/tv room). When you enter the room you'll see a "network rack" immediately to the left of the desk.

NUC in Rack

Once you are there, you'll want to open the rack and you should see the NUC server near the bottom right (highlighted above).

# Impacts of NUC Server problems

When the NUC server goes down it means that you may experience some of the following:

  • light switches stop working (not all of them but some of them)
  • WIFI service may degrade (it should still work however)

Beyond this we also lose diagnostics for the house and are unable to tell when batteries are low and need replacing, etc.

# Instructions for Rebooting

  1. Find power button and note current power state
    • The NUC's power button should located all the way to the right of the front panel
    • please also take note if the power is currently ON; if it is on the button will be lit up in a blue color
  2. Power Off NUC (ignore if already off)
    • press and hold the power button for 1-2 seconds
    • monitor the power button and make sure that the light does go off (aka, blue backlight goes off)
  3. Wait (ignore if power started in off state)
    • wait 10-15 seconds
  4. Power On
    • press and hold the power but for 1-2 seconds
    • monitor the power button and ensure that the power light comes on and stays on for at least 30 seconds

That should do it and the server will now restart it's services over the next few minutes.
